California Attorney General

As California’s Attorney General, I will take seriously my constitutional responsibility to ensure that the laws of California are uniformly and adequately enforced in every county. California cannot have one standard of justice in one community and a different standard in another. The law must apply equally—regardless of a person’s politics, wealth, neighborhood, or connections. I will begin by establishing clear statewide expectations for law enforcement and prosecution, while respecting the authority of local agencies. I will strengthen coordination between the Department of Justice, district attorneys, sheriffs, police departments, and other law enforcement partners, and require meaningful reporting so we can identify where laws are not being adequately enforced. Where local enforcement falls short, I will use the authority of the Attorney General’s office to intervene.

As Attorney General, my first priority will be to restore the principle that the law applies equally to everyone and must be enforced consistently throughout California. The California Constitution makes the Attorney General the state’s chief law officer and expressly charges that office with ensuring that state laws are “uniformly and adequately enforced.” 1. Public safety and enforcement of existing law. 2.Accountability for agencies that fail to enforce the law. 3. Support—not micromanagement—for local law enforcement. 4. Intervene when the public interest requires it. 5. Political neutrality and equal justice. California needs an Attorney General who will lead from the front, work with local law enforcement, and use the full authority of the office when necessary. My commitment will be simple: one state, one standard of justice, and equal enforcement of the law.

I support the 2026 California voter identification proposition because Californians should have confidence that every legally cast ballot belongs to an eligible voter. The measure, Proposition 39, would require government-issued identification for in-person voting and identification information for voters casting ballots by mail. It would also require the state to provide free voter identification cards to voters who do not otherwise have qualifying identification. As Attorney General, my responsibility would be to protect both the integrity of our elections and every eligible Californian’s right to vote. Those principles are not contradictory. We should make it easy for eligible citizens to obtain identification and easy for them to vote, while maintaining reasonable safeguards against fraud and ensuring that legitimate voters are not turned away. My promise is simple: every taxpayer dollar deserves to be protected, and anyone who steals from the people of California should expect to be held accountable. I will also publish measurable results: how many investigations were opened, how much taxpayer money was recovered, how many cases were prosecuted, and what safeguards were put in place to prevent repeat offenses. California does not need another layer of bureaucracy to tell taxpayers that fraud is a problem. It needs an Attorney General willing to find the waste, follow the money, prosecute the criminals, recover what was stolen, and hold government accountable. First, aggressively prosecute fraud and corruption. Second, follow the money. Third, protect whistleblowers. Fourth, demand accountability and transparency.

So, my assessment would be: strong border enforcement is a legitimate and important government function, and the reduction in unauthorized crossings is a significant result; however, effective enforcement should still be constrained by law, due process, humanitarian obligations, and careful consideration of whether particular measures actually improve security.

I believe California can build a culture that genuinely values babies, children, and parents while respecting the current constitutional framework on reproductive freedom. Proposition 1 is part of the California Constitution, so my focus would be on policies that make choosing life and raising children more achievable—not on pretending the constitutional language does not exist. As an elected leader, I would work to strengthen support for pregnant women and families by expanding access to prenatal and maternal care, making childcare more affordable, supporting adoption and foster families, and pursuing policies that help parents balance work and family. California already provides paid family-leave benefits for parents bonding with a new child; I would look for ways to make those benefits more accessible and ensure that families can actually afford to raise children. I strongly support the Supreme Court’s decision recognizing that parents have a fundamental role in directing the upbringing and education of their children. In Mirabelli v. Bonta, the Court concluded that California’s policies likely violated parents’ constitutional rights by preventing schools from informing parents about a child’s gender transition at school and, in some circumstances, requiring schools to use names and pronouns contrary to parents’ wishes. I believe parents—not government bureaucrats or school administrators—should have primary responsibility for raising their children.
